This workshop addresses a building block of argumentation in English Academic Writing: the claim. Academic arguments are webs of claims, sub-claims, and evidence. We will tackle the challenges of writing an effective central claim, commonly referred to as a “thesis” or a “thesis statement,” but we will ultimately cover claims and claim-making on all structural levels—the “big picture” argument, the paragraph, the sentence—of English academic writing. As such, we also will take on typical argumentative structures in English academic writing. Our workshop will address the inquiries: What makes an effective, sophisticated claim? How do you structure a paper around a central claim? How do you complicate your argument (by integrating opposing positions, etc.) without sacrificing coherency? How do you effectively integrate secondary material? What are the rhetorical components of a typical academic claim written in English? 

Over the course of the workshop, students will practice analyzing, evaluating, and writing effective claims in English Academic Writing, and students will have the opportunity to work on their current writing projects. Our objective is to better understand the particular expectations of English academic argumentation. Students will gain a working knowledge of the rhetorical and structural dimensions of effective claim-making, as well as a set of strategies for evaluating and revising the claims and argumentation in their own writing. 

The workshop will be conducted in English, will make use of English language materials, and will be led by a native English speaker (a U.S. American). 

Prerequisites:
All students from the 3rd semester can register for this workshop, or new MA students. (This workshop was designed for students who have some experience writing in academic English.) Prerequisites for participation are your presence during the entire duration of the workshop and active participation. The workshops of the writing center can be used for the optional modules of some subjects. You will receive a proof of participation from us; the credit would be distributed by the department.

Paper and something to write with.
