An Introduction to Academic English Writing: The Essay

The essay is an amorphous genre that originated as a literary form but has come to saturate English-speaking cultures and span mediums — documentary filmmaking, the photographic essay, and various podcast series are modeled on the kind of linear thinking displayed in the essay. In general terms, it is the central form through which we externalize clear, critical arguments: all essays regardless of medium or degree of formality present an organized perspective with the intention to persuade. In an academic context, this authorial perspective is governed by the dictums of academic argumentation: effective (that is, persuasive) academic essays develop a thesis, support that thesis with evidence, and anticipate objections or counterarguments. As such, good essay writing is not so much a faithful adherence to any one form as it is the effective communication of one’s carefully considered and argued ideas.
Our objective is to present students with a holistic approach to writing the academic essay, foregrounding the importance of critical thinking. This workshop will introduce participants to the academic essay, its purpose, its essential components, and its possible forms and argumentative structures. Students will read and analyze essays from a variety of contexts and academic genres as they explore the rhetorical style and argumentation of effective and persuasive writing. In addition, the workshop will cover various strategies for writing the academic essay. For example, students will receive practical guidance for developing a thesis, outlining, and testing an essay’s argumentation. Students will leave the workshop with an improved understanding of the academic essay as a form and strategies for developing effective and persuasive academic essays.
The workshop will be conducted in English, will make use of English language materials, and will be led by a native English speaker (a U.S. American).
Prerequisites:
All students from the 1st semester can register for this workshop. (This workshop was designed for students who have little to no experience writing in academic English.) Prerequisites for participation are your presence during the entire duration of the workshop and active participation. The workshops of the writing center can be used for the optional modules of some subjects. You will receive a proof of participation from us; the credit would be distributed by the department.

Paper and something to write with.
