Beschreibung

All writing needs some degree of revision, and most writing, especially complex, deeply-researched academic writing, needs extensive revision. This is an aphorism frequently repeated by professors, but the process of revision is not often explained or modeled, and many students face the daunting task of revision without the necessary tools to effectively complete it. How do you identify problem areas in your own text? How do you effectively structure the revision process? How can you use revision to progress your ideas?

These questions will guide us as we tackle revision on all levels of an academic paper. Our workshop will address how to identify and rectify “global" issues in a paper's structure and argumentation and paragraph-level issues like local cohesion. This workshop is not a copy-editing seminar; our time will be spent discussing “deep" or extensive revision, and how to make this kind of revision a part of our regular writing routines. Students will leave the workshop with a host of new strategies for the revision process, and they will be given the time and space to work on current writing projects and apply the knowledge of the workshop.

The workshop will be conducted in English, will make use of English language materials, and will be led by a native English speaker (a U.S. American).

Mitzubringen

Paper and something to write with, and a draft of a current writing project.

Voraussetzungen

All students from the 2nd semester can register for this workshop, or new MA or PhD students. (This workshop was designed for students who have some experience writing in academic English.) Prerequisites for participation are the presence during the entire duration of the workshop and active participation. The workshops of the writing center can be used for the optional modules of many subjects. You will receive a proof of participation from us; the credit would be distributed by the department.
