Argumentation in English Academic Writing

The courses and workshops offered by the Writing Centre are free of charge for students at Goethe University. | Registration is required for participation.

Instructors: Carly Crane
Date: Fri, 26.06.2026., 10:00-17:00
Location: SH 1.101
Maximum number of participants: 20

Description

Writing well in most English academic genres means arguing well. But what makes an effective, sophisticated argument? How do writers develop good arguments and evaluate their weak spots? How do writers communicate arguments to audiences convincingly?

We'll be guided by these questions as we explore argumentation in English academic writing and address key concerns students have about writing argumentatively, namely: developing a significant and original position, structuring thesis-based arguments, and integrating secondary materials. Over the course of the workshop, participants will analyze and evaluate exemplary student writing and will have the space to work on current writing projects.

The workshop will be conducted in English, will make use of English language materials, and will be led by a native English speaker (a U.S. American).

Content

  • the dialogic nature of academic argumentation
  • basic structure and characteristics of academic argumentation
  • strategies for developing an argument, integrating and responding to the arguments of scholarly sources, and structuring an argument
  • common English academic genres and how they organize argumentation

What to bring

Paper and something to write with.

The workshops of the writing center can be used for the optional modules of some subjects. You will receive a proof of participation from us; the credit would be distributed by the department.

Accessibility

Are there ways we can make it easier for you to participate in our workshops (e.g., by taking regular short breaks, using a large font size in our presentations, sending you the presentations with image descriptions in advance, etc.)? Please contact us as early as possible at schreibzentrum@uni-frankfurt.de, stating the workshop you would like to attend, and we will try to find a solution to your request!

Registration

Please use the registration form for all courses and workshops. The registration deadline is seven days before the workshop begins. IMPORTANT: If you register for one of our workshops at short notice, you will not automatically receive access to the OLAT course, where the location and other important information are communicated and all materials are uploaded. In this case, please be sure to contact us at schreibzentrum@uni-frankfurt.de so that we can send you the link and password for the OLAT course.
The registration form for our courses and workshops is released on April 1 for the summer semester and on October 1 for the winter semester.

If you are unable to attend the event, please cancel at least seven days in advance using our online form. You will receive the link to the cancellation page by email after registering. If you are ill on the day of the event, please send us a doctor's note. If you are absent without excuse or cancel at short notice, you will be blocked from all events in the current semester and will not be able to register for any of our workshops or courses in the following semester. To receive a certificate, participants must be present for 80% of the workshop time.
